Diciassette: Black Star Pastry

It just so happens that my next cafe entry is about Black Star Pastry. Mind you, this blog entry is aeons old, and I have since been back... a couple of times. Not the most convenient of places to go to, located at Newtown (where a certain someone failed to find the place and decided to have second-rated food elsewhere with lower companions), but I find the pastries so unique and delicious that the trip is always worth it.

Please stay tuned for a special section towards the end of this entry. One thing to note too, if there are lots of grammatical error and spelling mistakes, it's because I'm listening to the Les Mis ost at the same time. Never very good at listening music and doing other things...

This is their shop front, a small humble cafe that have boulders as tables that are shorter than your knees... but there are more seatings outside. Most people take away though.

Sedici: Plunge no.46

It's been a while! December already, about two months since tragedy struck, found myself in somewhat of a mid/quarter-life crisis, time flew... and I finally remembered my blog. Sort of. Except because it's been so long since my last post that I can't remember what I have posted about and what I haven't... the backlog goes beyond my memory already and I cannot even recollect where most of the photos were taken.

Oh well, here goes.

Plunge! Wait, what number am I up to in the cafe series again??

Micro Posts

After a long day's work, with another impending overbearingly huge workload tomorrow, this blog is looking extremely sad with lack of updates. Thus, all my backlogs shall stay as backlogs until there is actual time to sit and write a proper long entry, and that includes cafe series.

Micro entries are the way to go really.

Memento mori

I won't say that I'll keep blogging constantly because it's impossible. Lack of updates was inevitable because (emo mode on) life didn't feel happy enough to blog about food and cafes.

From 122___10
It's been more than two weeks since someone close to me passed away. It's the first time I experienced death so near to me. The last time I faced it was when my black cat died back years ago, where I was right there when it happened, felt him go cold and into rigor mortis, it was terrifying.

HS catch up

Ok this will be quick. I'm absolutely dead tired and still have to get up early for work tomorrow =( I was so alert, driving for about 2 hours there and 2 hours back from Canberra (yes, went to visit the Floriade, in rain, which... was actually not a bad thing because when it rains, you see water droplets on flowers which are quite attractive).

Observing long driving trips like this, you start to gather what the road rules are. There are the safe drivers, usually sticking to the left lane because they are usually driving at around 100km in the 110 highway. There are the slow ones who disrupt the flow of 100km cars, forcing them to overtake on the right lane, and move back into the left after overtaking (also known as the nice cars, following the "keep left unless overtaking" signs). Then there are the impatient ones, who stays on the right lane because they are usually at about 120km and do not bother shifting back to the left lane after overtaking- they'll only have to switch right again to overtake another car.

Which am I? I try to stick to 110 and overtake when necessary and move back left when I can... but turns out, I'm mainly a right lane hogger.

From 121___08

That's the end of the story for today. This was at Portofino, an Italian restaurant at Leichhardt (gosh, I doubt myself each time I spell that suburb... keep thinking that I'm doing it wrong). Their bruschetta pizza crust was pretty good~

Alternate healing? Not these ones...

Was given some weird health advice today by a random customer. It's one of those alternate medicine advice given by someone who claimed that hospitals are ripping everyone off by issuing medicines and chemo-therapies and surgeries that cost thousands of dollars and keeping everyone in the dark of these "natural" remedies.

I went home, googled his "advices" and I won't try any of them, so they are not worth repeating on this blog, nor will I promote it (the guy said "let everyone of your friends know, the current generation is missing out on these valuable cures"). Keywords for those who are curious though: black salve (nasty nasty images when I googled this, so be warned), kerosene (I know, people drink this stuff??) and borax (cleaning agent!! Hello!!)

Anyway, that's the end of the story for today, here's food:
From 121___08
I sincerely hope you didn't find any nasty pictures if you did decide to google, and anyway, I can think of many many many more appetizing things that I want to ingest than kerosene and cleaning agents.

Quindici: Cheeky Chocolate

This is bad... I'm trying to get my appetite back by blogging and it is -not- working. It's been more than a week since I felt hunger. It's so strange, I used to get hungry/ crave food every couple of hours... or just whenever I see food in general. That's all gone now. I can go by one meal a day, or not even that, and still summon enough energy to carry on working throughout the day. How is that even possible?

I was browsing through recipes to bake as well, and usually that gets my sweet tooth aching for candy. Or chocolate. Or cakes. Usually... =(

From 121___08

Anyway, I just made a microwave cake and it turned out quite alright... but then knowing me, it'd just get backlogged until I forget about it.

Quattordici: Revolver

This one is a majorly popular cafe, it was crazy. Located at Annandale, which looks deceptively like a quiet neighborhood, there were quite a few cafes that we saw had queues stretching far and wide. It was a Sunday morning, so no surprise there, but despite ST being early and requesting a table for us, when we arrived, it was an additional half an hour's wait.

From 121___08
And we ordered take away coffee just so we can have something while waiting. And checking out some the hardworking blokes making coffee~

Tredici: Gnome Espresso and Winebar

ST, BW, I'm catching up to you! ST posted about this recently on her blog, link should be on my companion's list on the side. Being one of the cafe buddies, she got the job of grabbing a table for us at this busy little cafe because we were late and she was early. That was one crazy Saturday, I remember it to be so activity-packed, there was little room for mismanagement and timing. We ended up being late, and I have a feeling it was my fault (or was it traffic?) but I cannot remember.

From 121___08

By the time we got there, ST was already enjoying her iced tea with lemon sorbet, looking every bit the relaxed classy lady having tea on her own in a quaint cafe. It's hard to pull off a "I'm not a loner!" pose... I must say, I suck at it.

Dodici: The Art of Pie Eating

Here's how backdated my photos are... today is going to be about Harry's Cafe de Wheels. I don't even remember when we visited that place, but we're looking at 2 months back. I decided to include this as part of the cafe series because technically, that's what it is- a cafe.

From 120___07

This was post badminton, when ST, BW and I decided to have some well-earned pies and pea mash. This was their signature dish named after founder Harry ‘Tiger’ Edwards of chunky lean beef pie served with mushy peas, mash & gravy.

Undici: The Little Marionette

So I've got myself a cup of peppermint and camomile tea, just woke up from a 3 hour nap, and decided I either do some work, or blog. Lack of blog entries due to combination of work, sickness, and can't-be-bothered'ness. Not just blogging, I haven't exercised in two weeks either... laziness. I've had all the photos up and ready on picasa, some which I even uploaded on facebook, but blogging is a lot more time consuming, so... this is the next entry, the Little Marionette, cafe entry No. 11!

From 120___07
Upon entering this place, one would first notice how small the space is. The kitchen taking up half of the space, and tables on the other half, barely fitting 8 people, plus a queue of people waiting on takeaways and ordering. Further in, a roasting room where a red coffee bean roaster sits, raw beans in sacks on the floor.

Dieci: Robocog

I'm working hard on things I shouldn't be working hard on and NOT working hard at... my presentations. Just did a massive spring clean on the refrigerator (rifuriji-ta) and chucked out all the expired items.. most of them anyway, while my parents were out of the house so they can't complain.

Nove: Bello

Alright, back to food. I don't do food posts all the time, because I like other aspects of life other than eating, like... fun stuff. Like... soap shredders, and music, and various other misc items.

From 120___07
Funny, this is a backlog, but Bello was actually revisited yesterday after badminton just for group coffee. The good thing about coffee is that it's perfect just having it by yourself, and you won't be considered too much of a loner sitting at a table by yourself with a good book, or some work to do (though some places might mind you using their cafe as an office...), and at other times, it's good catching up with a friend over coffee, or having a big group of friends to have coffee together.

Lazy and Random

Bruno Mars:
Today I don't feel like doing anything
I just wanna lay in my bed
Don't feel like picking up my phone, so leave a message at the tone
'Cause today I swear I'm not doing anything
Nothing at all, nothing at all~~~

You know, this really sums out what I'm feeling right now. I just woke up from a 3 hour nap, after coming home from work and a house warming party. Lots of food, lots of company, wine and champagne, tea and coffee, I didn't touch my phone till I was heading back.

15 serves only

Straying away from sugar for a bit, super short post!

From 120___07
I've been to Miso at World Square a few times before, but everyone tells me it's expensive, especially just for lunch. Sure, there are many Japanese restaurants out there that do cheaper lunch deals. You could probably go to a decent sushi train and it'd be cheaper there, but you won't get Miso's famous tonkatsu (served with Bulldog sauce, no less!) and you won't be getting deep fried rock oysters!

Otto: Pablo&Rusty's

Realised once again how terrible my self-restraint is. I've often made a conscious decision in my head to eat healthy and to eat at the right time of the day... to maintain a better lifestyle when it comes to food choices and forget junk food, namely candy and "instant" stuff.

That resolution starts when I'm not around food, and ends when I see food. That could be anywhere between 5 hours and 0.25 hours. It's currently past 12 midnight when I'm typing this and I just had dinner... rice, dish, plus soup. And some roasted peanuts (unsalted but in shell). And a few kumquats. The point isn't what I ate, because it's actually pretty healthy, but that it's the wrong time of the day when I should be sleeping soon. And the fact that I told myself only an hour ago that I wouldn't eat anything tonight before I sleep. Failed. T T

But I digress. Next cafe entry: Pablo&Rusty's!

From 120___07
So my deep unforgiving attitude towards Macchiato happened on this day which was supposed to be very exciting day. My brother bought tickets to go to Disney on Ice with his gf, but they had an anime thing to go to instead, so he gave the tickets to me. Gave... as in, I owe him dinner still, but it's all good! I've never been to Disney on Ice before, even as a kid... been missing out all these years, gotta catch up somehow.

This cake is real

Going to make this a sugar-filled post, as will be the next one. Wuah, I'm planning ahead on my entries! Just finished work and in dire need of some sugar, so I'm gorging on some homemade velvet cupcakes with cream cheese frosting while typing this... and having ordered my portal 2 hoodie online (from thinkgeek.com, for those who are interested, and it's on discount!), I'm thinking "cake!"

Sette: Ice n Slice

Short one! Just because I've been feeling particularly lazy these few days, thus the lack of entries. Procrastination is my nemesis... but I welcome distractions as if they are butterscorch/ double caramel popcorn. Guess that includes blogging, which, compared to actual work, is a lot easier to do.

From 120___07
Ice n Slice has so much history for me. JC introduced the place to me when we were besties at uni, studying Japanese culture together. We'd go there after class and have pizza... then rush back while holding gelatos and walking. It's a slightly longer walk than other restaurants we frequented at Newtown, but when you are eating a cone of gelato along the way, the walk seems a lot shorter than what it really is. And usually we'd be running cos we'd be late to class.

Sei: Bar Biscotti

I'm only behind by about.. hm... 8 cafes or so. IT'S OK! Why rush right? This cafe will be revisited anyway, since the voucher hasn't been used up yet. It was in the entertainment book, which I forgot to bring. That book is proving very useful this year actually, since I'm essentially sharing it with my parents and some friends.

From 120___07
Bar Biscotti is close to badminton. Kind of. It's at North Strathfield, nice and close for some, not so close for others. They do coffee well- Mokador. I've seen that blend quite often actually. I never used to notice coffee bean blends very much, but I do know the more popular ones, like single origin, campos and toby's estate.

From 120___07
Last week was very crazy. In a sense that I went out a lot to eat (maybe too much) and I am feeling slightly guilty because I should really be doing a lot more work than what I am currently doing. Conferences are catching up to me and I haven't even started on my presentations yet. That's worrying.

Cinque: Java Lava Cafe

Pennant Hills doesn't really change very much. Not usually. Franklins is still there, despite ongoing process of changing to an IGA... bakery has been there for years, same with the burger cafe next to it. Subway established itself not long ago, and there's Harris Farm's butcher and fruit shop. On the whole, Pennant Hills look like a rundown place that hasn't been renovated in decades, and that is true as to what it is really.

Outside, the Corner Cafe remains a favourite for getting quality coffee (Toby's Estate beans!) though for a short while when it was changing hands, the quality dropped drastically, but it's slowly establishing itself back as a place for good coffee. The owner guilt trips me when I don't visit, since she sees me at Franklins, and will ask where I have been.

Then this giant of a cafe opened up, just a few hundred metres away. Chain cafe/restaurant Java Lava.

Going Vegan

Last month, MS organised a high school catchup. The wonderful thing about it is that everything was organised purely via sms. I'm still stuck in the old school days where most events get organised via emails. At least gmail puts it all into a thread, remember hotmail when every reply was a separate email? Ye-a, that was a while ago.

Then now there's facebook or google events... which is mainly where things happen now actually, but it's good that things do get organised via sms... though I tend to forget those a lot quicker than email organised stuff, unless it goes straight into google calendar or something.

Anyway, I digress. We ended up at Nourishing Quarter, located at Redfern.

Bad times, Bad attitude

Am down. It's the second time of the year that I'm sick with something and this time, it's not even my fault. Thanks to all the colleagues who go to work sick and having to work with clients sniffling and coughing (usually without a hand covering), it was only inevitable. I find myself easily irritable because of this flu too. Little things. Like how this guy in front of me at the ATM today was trying to get $1 out. Seriously?? And you wonder why the machine spat your card out? AND YOU'RE STILL GOING TO TRY AGAIN? Wasn't going to miss my bus, so ended up being poor. The entire day. With maybe a few coins to my name.

From 06.12
Then I get home and wanted to blog something happy, but next photo in line was this.

Free Wednesdays shall be missed

Fusion is an excuse for those who do not know how to make authentic food. Such are the words of wisdom from one of BW's friends, and you know, it's quite true indeed. A lot of places which does fusion cuisine are actually doing it wrong... some more so in particular (cough cough wagamama). Some places, I appreciate their concepts of fusion, like Rise Restaurant, but nonetheless, there are some strange flavors and ideas that works theoretically, but not so much on the palate. So it's back to "normal" authentic cuisine. Actually, not that authenetic...

From 06.12
Takeru had always been a safe option when dining. Price is fairly reasonable for CBD area, and they serve half sizes. Seriously, you'd be hard pressed to find places that serve half size dishes...

Baking Spree cont~

On Mondays at work, lunch time is always a fun time because we'd be inspecting each others' lunches and being in awe of what some people can make. A current student brought his own pizza one time and it sparked a "please send me the recipe to the pizza base" trend. Of course, that is easily done through his iPad and I received a copy of the recipe immediately.
From 06.12
Which prompted me to make my own pizza. I had always been a little wary about using yeast. Making bread or anything that needs proofing in general. I have every right to be still, considering how that 3 day project ultimately ended with a big fat F.

Random 2!

It seems like this is going to alternate between a cohesive entry and one that is random... Wednesdays tend to be more random... and I don't like getting out my camera in front of people who judge me, namely those who mentally think "oh there we go, typical Asian person taking photos of food". Seem to be getting a lot of that actually...*sad face*

Tre: Pishon Patisserie

Sundays are usually cafe days. Pre badminton and post badminton are good times to eat, and you can easily justify eating an extra meal as rewards for exercising. Ok that's a completely unhealthy mentality, don't do that, but at least I like to think that it's better than heading to, say, maccas after badminton *cough*
From 06.12
Pre badminton one Sunday. We used to go as a group to have Korean food at Strathfield before badminton because it's quite convenient to meet up there before heading to Five Dock, but we've since stopped. This was long black from Hello! Happy, who does really good coffee. Check out the crema layer!

I've been meaning to make cookies for a while now, but rather than normal cookies (I know it's easy to make cookies from scratch), I thought, why not venture outside the box and make cake mix cookies? It's been done before, I won't say it's very original, but it's interesting to see how cake mix can be done, cookie style.

Cafe series II! I should really be writing the rest of my reports up. Last night's all nighter didn't really prove to be very efficient, with late owls sending me youtube clips out of sympathy for my otherwise boring night of work. I did manage to get some work done though, it's not all in vain, but I just got... more...

Lanterns and Lights

There are times when I'll "stalk" people, checking to see where they've gone to eat, and it's so common for people to post pictures of food and interesting things that there's never really a lack of places to discover. Not quite so recently, I noticed more than 3 people who weren't related in any way go to Lantern by Wagaya. Naturally intrigued, I decided to check it out.

From 06.12
It was pretty much like any other Japanese restaurants. It's a branch of Wagaya, but it reminded me of Mizuya and those other restaurants where you can order off a touch screen in a booth.

Arm yourself with Food!

So if you're reading this on the 11th, which is when it'll be scheduled to be released, I'll have you know that it's actually not written very much in advanced, haha. I ran out of scheduled posts! At one point, I had 9 all lined up and ready to go, then I got lazy and now I have... 0. Gonna work hard tonight for a bit even though I'm already quite.. sleepy.

I don't understand that white highlighting either! It's so strange, they just randomly show up in the published version, but when I go into my posts to edit, it's not there. I'm a total noob at websites and html, all that, but I had to manually delete all the span tag that makes the font background white... where do they come from!!

From 06.12
Anyway, I can't fix it without knowing how they get there in the first place, so... getting back on topic, this was from a high school catchup! FireFly~~

So every now and then, I'd crave healthy... actually, I don't crave healthy. I like seeing what it feels like to be healthy for once, so yesterday morning, all I had was a kiwi and an apple for breakfast before work. It was more like a brunch because I woke up pretty late, so the fruits were consumed at around 11am. Had a cup of tea and that was it. Just fruits. Maybe a packet of koala biscuits too...

Then I headed to work and didn't get food till a proper break, which was around 6pm, where I had a bowl of instant udon. Felt it wasn't substantial enough because it was just noodles and NO meat, NO veggies, nothing. Went and bought a loaf of bread and bacon... had two bacon sandwiches.

Still felt like I could eat. Leeched off a colleague for some peanut butter and had a peanut butter sandwich. Had more tea. Felt more satisfied....

Moral of the story? L cannot go healthy.

Filler entry

So I'm trying my absolute best NOT to skip around and post about interesting stuff that happened earlier on in the month and go in a "oldest to latest" order when it comes to blogging. Which is hard, because sometimes I feel that I'll forget a lot of what I want to take note of, but I realise if I don't force myself to go in an order, I will end up just not blogging about half the stuff.

That was actually why I started scheduling posts too actually, because then I can publish more than one entry on a day when I'm free, and have them line themselves up individually to be released on days when I cannot post.

Uno: Coffee Warehouse

Now that Vivid is out of the way, I can get on to REAL stuff. Like the month of June. Everything prior to this was from May... yea... backlog sure accumulates when one gets lazy... but never you mind! June was filled with fantastic adventures to Candy Mountain... many... candy mountains..

Photo Blog Entry 3

This will be the last I think! I've been on a baking spree lately, baking cookies, pizzas... and now, attempting something which I actually find quite daunting because the fail rate is almost for sure, like 80% or something. I've been obsessing over yeast as well, so making bread, things that go poofy (how aptly called "proofing" when waiting for the dough to raise...). Enough about that for now! The current project will take a minimum of two days, but I might draw the process out to three days. If this fails, I'll cry. 3 days worth of... pain and doubt... and 3 sticks of butter.. and about a kilo of flour... and muscle pain from kneading because I don't have a mixer... haha.

At least I get a good arm workout. I find that I knead so much better with my right hand, which is extremely strange because my left arm is supposedly the stronger one of the two. Maybe it's just tired from badminton last night.

Oh right, you want pictures.

Photo Blog Entry 2

Might just finish off Vivid today. I forgot entirely about blogging till I saw the date... and saw it was approaching the end of June. Today was freezing cold, it was literally the coldest day it's been this whole year, and it's pure torture getting out of bed. No, scrap that, it's pure torture to even get out of the first layer of my blankets, much less all three, and don't even talk about getting out of the bed entirely. I can't be thankful enough for my blankets... don't even feel the cold AT ALL even on the coldest nights, and this is without turning on any heaters.

Once out of bed though, it's straight into blue snuggly bathrobe and much needed hugging of the heater. Digressing!

One of those "deals"

Because my brother had been forking up the previous two dinners that we've had (we don't go out for dinner often together anymore because someone's more occupied with gf and friends and photogs and stuff), buying those online deals, when he sent me the link to this one, I took the very unsubtle hint and bought it for us.

It was a deal for two at Dan's House, a newly opened Chinese restaurant near China Town. Location's a little tricky because you need to go up the lift to find it, but there is a giant sign right outside at the streets, so it's not too bad.

The food? Hm... very artistic and interesting, and I do approve of the flavors so it's a pass!

Wong Lo Kat

Back about a month ago, BW decided to host a hot pot night... yay! There's apparently a second one coming out, so looking forward to that.

Before that, headed to Eastwood to buy the meat. It's great how hot pot didn't require any preparation, or much of it anyway. Only needed to go shopping! After shopping, chilled at Bom's, had tea, before heading back for more chilling and food.

Wasabiated

Small one today! Thurday-Saturday, Monday and Tuesday are never really eventful due to work, which is why bored people like me choose the most mundane things to take photos of. The thing is, at that time, I recently got a new phone, and I was very interested in testing out the camera and the effects it came with, including vignette and field distortion.

Let's Start!

Funny how many people use this blog as a way of "catching up" with me. It's almost one sided communication unless people leave comments or something on the chatbox, but otherwise, it's almost like I'm giving away the fact that I'm still alive and doing things, but I don't know if my friends (people who read this) are or not. Anyway! I'm not sure how long this string of scheduled posts will last, but I expect someone will owe me certain Japanese trip videos for doing this, hope to get a chance to see them soon *shifty eyes*

Love my coffee from TomnTom's, but this entry is actually going to be about how beautiful Sydney is. I don't think I truly appreciate Sydney for its beauty for a while now, since it's been over a decade since we moved here, everything kind of wanes a bit with time.

Started the lovely day by having sushi from Kura II, a small corner restaurant just behind Market City. I remember it used to be a lot better with its sushi, standard seemed to have dropped.

Slacker

Have a long black. Because someone is working really hard on typing up entries and hopefully make another month's worth of stuff up. Feeling extremely ke lian because the blog itself looks abandoned, but there's so much going on in the background... but it's not ready to be out yet...

Actually, I joke. There's only about 4 entries so far. Have actually been slacking off... was gonna write another one up... but oh, it's time for dinner :D
